final current events quiz

1) The conflict is over a house that is an eyesore,  few blocks from Nau’s Enfield Drug store. I think the Old West Neighborhood Association has a better argument because the house is over 100 years and and the last time they tore a house down they just replaced it with condos and I think the old houses value is worth much more than some condos. The compromise is subdividing the lot, meaning allowing the house to stay on one part of the land but also allowing for development. I think the compromise is good because it allows for both sides of the argument to be happy and allows for an old landmark to stay.
2) The school's proposed a partnership with Boeing and on Tuesday, announced that they will compete for a contract to operate one of the nation's nuclear labs. They will bid to run Sandia National Laboratories and the universities would provide research expertise, workforce training and independent peer review of the work done at Sandia. I don’t think that universities should support the making of nuclear weapons. I think that it sends a bad message and doesn’t make them look very good, not to mention it is dangerous.
3) The latest news is that prosecutors brought Bill Cosby to trial, saying he drugged and assaulted a woman whom he used to mentor. Cosby's lawyers argued that the district Attorney had promised not to prosecute if Cosby came forward. This time the lawyers are expected to suppress evidence and Cosby is expected to fight any attempt to introduce new evidence. I don’t think the arguments are very good, I think the lawyers are very desperate. I think the story is fine on the front page, it has a lot of celebrity and people are likely to read it.
4) The school board voted to change the name and the school is now known as Russell Lee Elementary School. Russell Lee was an important photographer in the Depression-era. They name it Russell Lee because many community members already had shown support for that name choice. The compromise was that now the school can remain “Lee Elementary.” The final vote was a bit awkward because of Saldana the 1 who voted against the name. He said that keeping the word “lee” in the name kind of defeated the purpose of renaming it. I kind of agree with him and I think the school should have been renamed Bettie Mann Elementary.
5) One outcome is that the athlete recruiter, Ken Starr will be fired. Art Briles mishandled the sexual assault scandal. I think that the person/people responsible should receive punishment.

Lee Story

Robert E. Lee Elementary is going through a renaming because many people are offended because the school is named after a confederate general. The nominations will be compiled in preparation for the board to decide on a name on May 23. “There are some people who always wanted the name to be changed, myself included
because of the legacy of Robert E Lee.” says Jack Vela, a senior at Mccallum who supports the decision. “Maybe it was guilt that we have all these symbols that started this all.”
Vela went to Lee from 2nd to 6th grade and all of his four siblings attended the school as well. So it is fair to call his family a true “Lee Family.” Another Lee alumni who also goes to Mccallum Nadia Freeman says she thinks the school should be named after Bruce Lee so the school could have a less offensive name but also remain “Lee.” Jack Vela believes it should be renamed Waller Creek Elementary because he likes the name and “because it's an easy way to name it geographically.”
“The school was built in the 30s when the city was undergoing a lot of segregation. I feel like at that time it made sense to name the school that to bring back the old confederate idea but at the same time he was also active in education.” says Vela, he thinks that although it may have made sense at the time they named it to name it after a white hero with the society we live in now it is just too offensive to keep the name. There is an argument that the name should remain the same to serve as a memory and a lesson but lessons can be taught and memories will be remembered.
“It's hard to see your elementary school's name changed because of sentimental value, but I don't think that's enough to ignore what the original name stands for.” says Nadia Freeman. She thinks we should question whether or not we want to have a school named after a man who stood for something so evil. Vela is excited for the change because he never expected the people to actually do something about the name.
The three final name choices that the board is deciding between are Russell Lee, one of America’s most important photographers. The next is Bettie Mann who was the first African-American teacher and the last is Wheeler’s Grove which was the site of Austin’s first Juneteenth celebrations. Out of the final three names Jack Vela thinks it should be Bettie Mann. “It's absolutely ludicrous after all this time we still have schools and in the schools that are considered the good schools are the white schools even like 40 years later and we haven't really done anything you know as a community to address that and I think that's a serious problem in and of itself than just the name of school.” says Vela. The renaming of Lee Elementary school could just be the beginning of some big changes that we, as Americans will need to take to rid our society of certain bad messages and symbols that we display.

current events 6.1

1. treasury secretary announced that they are going to change the $20 bill from President Andrew Jackson to Harriet Tubman, A former slaves and the greatest hide and seek player in the world. this will change the Currensy because not only will there be presidents on the bills but also important history figures. Using a Broadway brat musical about the first Treasury Secretary might excite the Fanbase.

2. To state officials in a city employee were accused of covering up evidence of lead contamination. This is a rare case because the people who were accused were charged for being personally bad at their job but there wasn't any correction involved. The mayor plans to fill jugs with the tapwater this week and drink it for 30 days to show that it is safe. I think that the mayor doing this will help the situation.
3. Quinton and Trump campaign darn big your rated because of the big wins in New York. Clinton now has the majority of the delegates she needs to get the democratic nomination. Trump has also been doing well on the Republican race. Clinton's went to New York which is a state that she has represented before definitely helped her and wasn't a good thing to happen for Sanders.
4.Texas teachers union sued the head of the state education agency because of the new evaluation system that takes in teacher scores and students performance on standardized tests. The lawsuit seeks to block the Texas education agency from implementing the system. It is scheduled to take effect on July 1. AISD is adopting it's own system. The union is concerned that this new standards will encourage school districts to valuate teachers based on statistical analysis which means that they are measuring students improvement over time.
5. Volkswagen makes a deal to pay you ask customers. The government and private lawyers have reached an agreement for the company to spend just over 1 billion to compensate owners because the diesel powered cars cheated on emissions tests. Still others could receive money due to violations of the clean air act. They still have to make a payment because I need to help Volkswagen pay their debt.
6. There was a story about a dog that was surfing in Port A at a festival which raises awareness for dogs that need to be adopted. I liked the article because I think it's important for people to adopt dogs rather than spending large amount of money on purebred animals.

Front Pages of the World

1. My favorite  newspaper front page was the pacific daily news because the main story title was about a boy commuting a murder and that just pops out at you.
2. My favorite  headline from that newspaper was "away wizard guilty of murder" because again it really pops out at you and also I think that murder stories are really interesting.
3. There were 3 stories.
4. All the pages have big titles, pictures and many of the stories had to do with politics because often times that's what peoples interests.
5.  The things that vary on different pages are the fonts and story topics and some of the headline sizes were smaller.

Column Emulation

This is a story based on Miramon Nuevo's style of writing where the two main characters are my cat, Tiger and a dog that I pet sit named Stanley. They often find each other and so I decided to personify them and create the story.

Tiger vs Stanley for the 4th time?
"Of course" says Audrey Sayer, owner of Tiger. "Why wouldn't they go for each other again?" The two animals have had a back and forth love/hate relationship ever since they met. Tiger says he plans on retiring soon, but not before he beat Stanley and one last fight. Many fans are wondering if The animals are too old to keep battling each other in this way. "I don't know if Stanley can take anymore of tiger's beatings." Says owners Allie and Dan.

It is the day of the fight and two animals are getting ready, and strategizing, trying to figure out the best way to overcome the other.  After the match is over, and Tiger comes out as the winner he says "That was a rest match, but I think it was a good end to my career." Overall the two animals have had some good runs against each other but even Stanley is happy at the way his career turned out and is glad to have been a part of something big.

Other highschool newspapers

1. My favorite newspaper front page is Le Journal because I liked the name it made it seem almost foreign.
2. The paper that immediately grabbed my interest was The Trigger Point paper because the first page was talking about how women vs men are treated in classes.
3. "Inside clayton's drinking culture" because I feel like the name pops out because it is more unusual.
4. my favorite paper has no stories on the front cover :(
5. The pages all include photos and stories that are relevant to the school which is similar to the mccallum newspaper as well.
6. The papers have different fonts, titles and story topics which usually pertain to the school.
7. Some of them were similar but the newspapers from around the world were a little more professional which isn't a surprise
