current event quiz

1. Glenn Hegar is a comptroller, he was asked whether or not the "sky is falling" in Texas. Falling fossil fuel prices prompted the question. Hegar answered the question by saying "if you look at the long term trends, we've had slot of trail winds." The severance taxes on oil and gas producers take 7.5 percent of the market value.

2. Donald Trump is sitting out of the debate because he is instead hosting an event for war veterans and wounded warriors. It is risky because it is the second to last debate. I think it will help because it makes him look good. There is a proposed debate to be held on but the three canisters must face the fact that they may not go to the debate. the new hampshires primary takes place. I don't think the event will take place because it is so close together and seems like a lot of work.

3. The enemy they are fighting is the mosquitos. They are distributing mosquito repellent to pregnant woman who will receive cash benefits as incentive. Zika, chikungunya, dengue and yellow are virus' that mosquitos carry. The heath minsters remarks are controversy because it is the mosquitos that are killing people and it's not anyone's fault. This summer Rio de Janero is hosting the summer olympics.

4. Steven Weinburg said that he plans to ban guns from his classroom. Mc Raven says they should take to staff members and make sure everyone is aware of the situation because the law goes into affect on January 1st so the school needs to be prepared. Justin wood said that most people who conceal or carry weapons are still going to bring them into his classroom because they don't care.

5. Ken Paxton is a Texas Attorney General, he rejected the recent move to settle the Syrian refugees with out giving state officials one week notice. The Justice department moved 7 refugees. Paxton said that the government can't properly conduct background checks on the refugees.

6. If the team beats Kanas then they will have there 1,000th win. The current season is going well as the team is 18-1. The teams biggest weakness is turnovers, they average 17 a game.

7. I like the New York Times Lead better because it in the statesman one it used the term "sad eyes face" which I didn't really like because the obituary shouldn't be focused on how his face looks "sad."

Feature: Mitch Albom

1) The article cut up the different parts of a story and zoomed in, allowing for the reader to understand in full how to write a good story. Each section included examples of good ones and also what not to do. Although it was slightly dull it was a very informative text.

2) A good lead opens the story and lays out some basic information and also usually introduces characters. Many people like leads more when they open with action so it sucks the audience into the story.  A lead is also a good way to give a story an attitude or mood so the audience knows what their getting themselves into.

3) To write a good middle point it is a good idea for the author to do some interviews. By doing this the author gives the audience another perspective so the story isn't so one sided. Also it makes the story look far more professional.

4) A great ending is often thought to have to be huge but according to this article the best ending is a subtle one. Personally my favorite kind of ending is when a story comes full circle or relates back to the beginning. The ending should also include ur opinions to make sure the meaning of the story comes across.

Quotes:

"I think straight news stories still have to be governed first and foremost by the who-what-where-when and why."
I chose this quote because I thought it was a good description of writing a story.

"People love to be dropped in to something"
I chose this quote because I completely agree with this and I think it is how u open a story well.

"how do you get something in the lead that doesn’t put people to sleep"
I chose this quote because it is important to not bore the audience with the first scene.

"the more subtle ending, the better"
I chose this quote because I like subtle endings that make you go "ohhhhh"

"it's a great ending right? it's a great ending"
I chose this quote because we should read more stories with great endings.

Obituaries

David Bowie was an inspiration for many people, he connected and spoke to people with his music. Many of his songs were about being an outsider or feeling like you don't belong and this subject connects with many people. He should be remembered by the music that he made, which inspired so many people.

All of the obituaries went over the life's work of the person who died I think the authors chose to do this because it gave the reader background knowledge on the persons life. Two of the people that died, David Bowie and Alan Rickman, died of cancer which I thought was interesting. All the the obituaries mentioned how the person died which I think is important. The story on Glenn Frey included lyrics from one of his songs which was an interesting addition to the story.

Bobby Hawthorne (absent)

1. Hawthorne suggests reporters to not just write their stories about a single broad subject like football but to zoom in on one player, figure out about their lives and fully understand them in order to produce a good story. He says that writers should show emotion through their stories to be more human and let people connect with their subjects. If writers just wrote bland stories without any imagination or thought, nobody would read them. He says that any story can be interesting if you make it good.

2. His recipe starts with drama, the story has to be juicy for people to want to bite into it. He says to build your story around real person, not a made up character. The story must also have conflict, there must people a character that maybe the reader doesn't like or an idea that is blocking the chapters path. There should also be dialogue as well as order, the story should follow a certain sequence so that it makes sense. Also it needs to include anticipation so that the story can build suspense and last, there must be a climax or major event/turning point in the story.

When Your Dream Dies

1. The significance of this story is to show how sometimes certain moments in people's lives can make them feel worthless, to the point of attempting suicide. This story is more important than one person because it gives insight on what many people go through in their lives that pushes them to the edge.

2. The writer doesn't really alert himself in the story at all, it is mostly focused on the main character. This makes the article better I think, because the author doesn't need to be in the article because he has no part in the story.

3. The writer veers away from traditional writing by writing about a very sensitive topic, I personally know someone who has attempted suicide three times and would definitely not attempt to write this article so I consider it very bold.

4. The writer reported this story by following a time of about maybe 6 months with some background information about one mans journey and self discovery. The authors sources mostly conceited of family, friends or people who knew the man personally.

5.

  • Kris asked him, "Daddy, why did you want to die?" I think the author asked "What was your sons reaction to the event?'
  • "Don't let them win," she was saying. "Don't let them win." Think the author asked "At what point did you know you made a mistake?"
  • "The phone started ringing in his little white two-story in Walnut" I think the author asked "What were the people's reactions to your call at the game?"

While this may not be the most important thing that happened this year it was very significant in these peoples lives. Their homes were ruined by the flooding and many of them probably got sick because of the trash mixed in with the dirty water.

The Syrian refugees played a large role in the news in 205 and will probably continue to be in the news this year as well. This picture shows the numbers of them, pushed into crowded places, trying only to escape the terror of the lives they are trying to leave behind.

The attacks on Paris this past year, meant to hurt the world as ISIS tries to attempt to cause more fear yet only succeeding in uniting the world and empowering people to have the courage to stand up and understand the terror and evil that ISIS continues to cause for no reason other than power.

Sorry by Justin Bieber is probably my favorite song because after he disappeared for more than a year Bieber cam back with a fierce fire and we were left with some very catchy tunes that quickly rose to the top of the billboard. I all rely enjoyed the song FourFiveSeconds.

The Martian was probably my favorite movie of 2015 because I read the book so I was very excited for the movie and since the movie followed the book well it made me love the movie more. Also the cast was very good and Matt Damon was great as usual. My second favorite movie was probably Jurassic World because I have always liked the Jurassic Park movies and this new one did not fail to amaze.

The Paris attacks were the most important news story of the year because they united everyone and made people realize how terrible ISIS really is and shocked the world because a developed and secure county lune France is not normally attacked.

I do not think there was just one most important person of the year, I think that many people do something important everyday and that one person should take the credit for it.

I think that Justin Bieber is the most important person in entertainment this year because he made a huge comeback and also spent a lot of time saying sorry and trying to regain his image and get rid of the old bad impression.

My Holiday:

1. My smily spent one whole day making cookies and we made 6 different kinds and they were very yummy.

2. I don't have any resolutions only the hope that this year will be even better than the last.

3. In 2016 I am looking forward to all the traveling hat I will be doing because I am going to 5 countries I have never been to along with 2 I have already visited.
